Jan. 8th, 2020 06:56 pmOkay, so thanks to Mr. Enter's Nick-o-rama, I started rewatching Rugrats. (The pre-Dil seasons) It holds up okay, it's not the BEST show and it has its flaws, but it's fun. But this isn't a review post. This is me remembering how, as kids, my sister and I watched the Toy Palace episode. I asked her if she though Stu or Chaz was the better dad, and she pointed out Stu lets Tommy get hurt a lot. I thought Chaz was just overprotective.
As an adult rewatching this show and realizing just HOW absent-minded most of the parents are? MY SISTER WAS RIGHT. I mean, Stu's a good guy, not a bad dad, but Chaz was the only one with much common sense. THEY'RE BABIES! Yeah, it's a cartoon and the plot sorta relies on the kids being able to sneak past their parents. Real kids do manage that from time to time no matter how competent their parents were. But still, Chaz at least TRIED to keep that from happening.
(Also, seeing the Mother's Day episode put his behavior in perspective. Of course he's overprotective, Chuckie is all he has!)
That said, it doesn't dampen my enjoyment of the show. It's a fantastical cartoon with potato-headed babies doing crazy things. Though at times I wonder if the show could've taken a cue from Muppet Babies and had the kids use their imaginations more. There WERE episodes where they had adventures without going anywhere and they were good ones. Imagination can be a powerful tool.
